Mrs Christina Farkas – Maths Curriculum Leader
Hello! My name is Christina Farkas, and I am proud to lead the Maths curriculum at Eastburn Primary School. Mathematics is a fundamental subject that underpins many aspects of our daily lives and plays a vital role in helping children develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and the ability to think critically. At Eastburn, we follow a mastery approach to teaching maths, which allows every child to gain a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts.
Our approach is structured around three key stages: Practical, Challenge, and Explore. In the Practical stage, we focus on fluency and varied fluency, ensuring that children gain confidence with basic skills and understanding through the use of conceptual variation. This helps solidify the foundation for more complex tasks. As children progress, the Challenge and Explore stages engage them in reasoning and problem-solving tasks, allowing them to apply their knowledge and think critically about mathematical concepts. This approach ensures that learning is both deep and meaningful, with each child encouraged to think and reason in different ways.
We also believe in the importance of partnership between home and school in a child’s mathematical development. By discussing maths at home, practicing skills, and exploring problem-solving situations, parents and carers can help reinforce and extend the learning taking place in school.
At Eastburn, our aim is to foster a love for maths and to ensure that every child is confident and capable, not only in their academic pursuits but in applying their mathematical skills to real-life situations.
Eastburn Maths Curriculum
Everyone can do maths: everyone can!
The White Rose Maths schemes of learning are designed with a clear, time-linked plan for learning. The enables teachers to have time to explore and understand concepts in depth, rather than covering it superficially and then returning several times. The practice and consolidation helps children to grasp the links between topics and to understand them more deeply.
At Eastburn we follow the White Rose Maths ethos of:
'Day after day, we’re shaping happy, confident and resilient learners who discover that maths brings an exciting journey of
discovery, understanding – and a lifetime of opportunities.'
