Science

Mrs Hannah Newman – Science Curriculum Leader

Hello and welcome!

A little about me: I have been fortunate to work at Eastburn Primary for the past nine years, and I have been teaching for eleven. Alongside my love of science, I also have a passion for the Early Years. The building blocks established in the Early Years are fundamental in developing a lifelong love of learning. Through the Understanding of the World area of learning, I have gained a wealth of experience in science. I particularly enjoy the opportunities it gives children to explore, investigate, and immerse themselves in practical science.

At Eastburn, we encourage pupils to become powerful, enthusiastic scientific learners whose natural curiosity about the world around them is stimulated and enhanced through exciting, challenging activities. Their interest in observing, understanding, and finding rational explanations for what they see is nurtured and supported, so they are prepared and able to suggest hypotheses and test them safely and effectively to further their own learning. We provide a stimulating environment where science is embraced, giving children the opportunity to design and carry out their own experiments in order to develop a deeper understanding of the wider world.

We recognise the importance of scientific enquiry and place great value on utilising the outdoors to give pupils the chance to experience science first hand. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore their environment, and learn through discovery. We also believe it is vital to introduce pupils to a diverse range of scientists, past and present, to challenge stereotypes and help every child see that anyone can be a scientist.

Our science curriculum is carefully structured around the requirements of the National Curriculum. It is thoughtfully planned to ensure that new learning builds securely on prior knowledge, with regular opportunities to revisit and consolidate what has already been taught.

I hope you enjoy looking through our science page and seeing the exciting opportunities we aim to provide for the children throughout their time at Eastburn Primary.

October 2026

It has been a very busy first half term across school with the Science learning that has taken place. Below you will see a selection of photos from different year groups and some of the way's they have explored their current Science topic.

Reception Class have been busy exploring the outdoor area and foraging for Autumn resources. We have made beautiful Autumnal crowns and used leaves to create leaf bug pictures.

We have had lots of rich discussion around seasons and how we can spot changes in our environment.

Our new potion lab has been a huge success and lots of wonderful 'delicious' pumpkin and conker soup has been made!

Year 3 were super busy exploring the different properties of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. They created their own clay print fossils, that were super impressive!

Year 4 took their learning outside. They searched for different habitats and the insects that lived in them.

Year 5 have been exploring forces this half term. They used a range of resources including a newton meter to measure gravity and then tested air resistance with different shaped parachutes.

British Science Week - Science Fair 2023

We would like to thank all the families who joined us to celebrate Science Week at our science fair - we are immensely proud of all our young scientists who were really enthusiastic all through Science week and clearly, thoroughly enjoyed sharing their amazing investigations with you all.

For even more fun STEM activities head over to the IMechE "STEM at home" page here.

Please share any activities that you enjoy at home, with us at school, we would love to hear about them.
